Where Do Script Mods Go Sims 3?

For Sims 3, script mods, which are .package files, go into the Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages folder. If this folder structure does not exist, you must create it manually and add a critical Resource.cfg file to enable the game to read the mods.

Note: Do not confuse this folder with the game's installation directory in Program Files, which is the wrong location for user mods and can cause issues.

Part 1: Setting up the Sims 3 mod framework

Unlike The Sims 4, The Sims 3 does not automatically generate the mod folder. If this is your first time installing a .package mod, follow these steps to create the necessary framework.

  1. Locate your Sims 3 user data folder:
    • On Windows: Go to Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3.
    • On Mac: Go to Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3.
  2. Create the 'Mods' folder: Inside the The Sims 3 folder, create a new folder named exactly Mods (with a capital 'M').
  3. Create the subfolders: Inside the new Mods folder, create two more folders: Packages and Overrides.
  4. Get the Resource.cfg file: This file is essential for making the game recognize .package files. It can be downloaded as part of a pre-made framework from reliable sites like ModTheSims. Extract this file directly into your new Mods folder, not into a subfolder.
  5. Test your framework: Most downloaded frameworks include test mods, such as one that removes the intro movie. If you start your game and the EA/Maxis intro video is gone, your framework is correctly installed.

Part 2: Installing script mods

Once your framework is in place, you can add your mods.

  1. Download your mod: Download the .package file from a reputable modding site. It often comes compressed in a .zip or .rar archive.
  2. Extract the file: Use a program like 7-Zip or WinRAR to extract the .package file from the archive.
  3. Place the file in the correct folder: Drag and drop the .package file into the Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages folder.
  4. Organize your mods (optional): For better organization, you can create subfolders inside the Packages folder (e.g., Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages\NRaas).
  5. Place overrides correctly: The Overrides folder is for mods that are meant to replace or take precedence over core game files. If a mod specifically indicates it should go in the Overrides folder, place it there. Otherwise, stick to the Packages folder.

Part 3: Post-installation best practices

To ensure a smooth experience, follow these steps after adding new mods.

  • Delete cache files: Always delete the game's cache files before launching the game, especially after adding or removing mods. This forces the game to rebuild them and recognize your new files. The cache files are located in your main The Sims 3 folder and include:
    • CasPartCache.package
    • compositorCache.package
    • scriptCache.package
    • simCompositorCache.package
    • socialCache.package
  • Clear the DCBackup folder: Periodically delete the contents of the DCBackup folder, located in Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\DCBackup, as it can accumulate clutter from your downloads.
  • Check compatibility: Before downloading, read the mod's description to ensure it's compatible with your game's patch level and doesn't conflict with any other mods you have installed.
  • Install one mod at a time: If you are installing a new core or script mod, install and test it individually to ensure it works correctly before adding others. This makes troubleshooting much easier.
  • Keep your mods updated: Mod authors frequently release updates to fix bugs and maintain compatibility with the latest game version. Regularly check for updates for all your installed mods.
