On X (formerly Twitter), you can voice a post by recording a short audio message directly within the mobile app and sharing it with your followers.
The voice post, also called a voice tweet, will appear on your timeline as a regular post with an audio attachment. This feature is particularly useful for adding a personal, human touch to your content, providing extra context, and conveying tone and emotion that text alone cannot.
Method 1: Create a voice post on X (mobile)
This is the most direct way to create a voice post and is available on the X mobile app for iOS devices. Android support for this feature is limited and has been intermittent.
- Open the X app on your iPhone or iPad and log in to your account.
- Start a new post by tapping the compose button, which is the blue circle with a plus sign at the bottom right of your screen.
- Find the voice icon. In the new post composer, look for the voice tweet icon, which looks like a soundwave or three vertical lines. Tap it to begin.
- Record your message. Tap the red record button at the bottom of the screen to begin recording your audio.
- Record limit: A single voice post can capture up to 140 seconds (2 minutes and 20 seconds) of audio.
- Continue recording: If you need more time, a new voice post will automatically start to create a thread, extending your message.
- Finish and post. When you are done, tap the "Done" button at the top right of the recording screen. This adds the audio clip to your post. You can then add any accompanying text, hashtags, or mentions before tapping "Post" to share it with your followers.
Method 2: Share a voice recording as a video (desktop and mobile)
If you are using the X website on a desktop or if the native voice post feature is unavailable on your mobile device, you can create a video that contains only an audio track.
- Record your audio. Use your computer or phone's native voice recorder or a third-party app to record your message.
- Add a visual element. Use a video editor to combine your audio recording with a static image, such as your profile picture, a branded graphic, or a plain background. This turns your audio into a video file (e.g., MP4) that X supports.
- Upload the video. From the X post composer on the website or mobile app, click the "Add photos or video" button and select your new audio-video file.
- Add text and post. Write any accompanying text and post the video. Your followers can then play the video to hear your message.
Method 3: Use a third-party web service
Services like Reverb Record allow you to record an audio message and get a link to share on X.
- Visit the service website. Go to Reverb Record or a similar service.
- Record your audio. Click the record button and speak your message.
- Share the link. The service will provide you with a shareable link. Copy and paste this link into a new X post.
- Post the message. The audio will be embedded in your post, and followers can click the link to listen.
Voice posts in direct messages (DMs)
You can also send voice notes privately in direct messages on the X mobile app.
- Open a DM conversation. Go to the "Messages" tab and select a chat with a specific user.
- Tap the voice icon. Within the chatbox, tap the microphone or voice icon to start recording.
- Record and send. Press and hold the icon to record your message. When you are finished, release the button to send it.
Best practices for voice posts
- Prioritize mobile for native posts: The native voice post feature is an iOS-only function. For the most direct experience, you must use the X app on an iPhone or iPad.
- Keep it concise: While the time limit is generous, shorter audio clips are often more engaging and likely to be listened to in full.
- Add an introduction via text: Always include a short line of text with your voice post. This gives context to users who might have their audio muted and provides a call to action for them to listen.
- Consider accessibility: For users who are deaf or hard of hearing, a written transcription of your audio is helpful. This can be added in the accompanying text or as a threaded post.
- Check your surroundings: Record in a quiet environment to ensure your audio is clear and free of background noise.
- Use them strategically: Voice posts can be effective for sharing thoughts, giving personal updates, or adding a human element to announcements. They are a great way to break up a content feed dominated by text and images.
