To undeed land from a group in Second Life, you must sell the parcel back to yourself.

A group cannot "undeed" land directly; ownership must be transferred to a new party, which in this case is you, the original owner. Before doing so, you must remove your land contribution to the group to avoid an unnecessary increase in your personal land tier.

The key steps to undeed your land

Step 1: Remove your land contribution from the group

This is a critical first step. If you do not remove your contribution, your land tier will immediately increase the moment the parcel is back in your name, possibly incurring unexpected charges.

  1. Open the Communicate menu and select My Groups.
  2. In the People window, navigate to the MY GROUPS tab and select the group to which the land is deeded.
  3. Click the Group Profile button.
  4. Go to the Land/Assets tab.
  5. In the "Your contribution" field, change the value to "0" sq meters and click Save.

Step 2: Prepare the parcel for transfer

Before selling the land back to yourself, you need to turn off the automatic object return feature for the parcel. This prevents all objects on the land from being returned to the group's or owner's inventory during the transfer.

  1. Stand on the parcel of land you wish to undeed.
  2. Go to the World menu and select About Land (or right-click the land and select "About Land").
  3. Click the OBJECTS tab.
  4. Set the "Auto return other Residents' objects" value to "0".

Step 3: Sell the land back to yourself

This is the action that officially transfers the land ownership from the group back to you.

  1. While in the About Land window, navigate to the GENERAL tab.
  2. Click the Sell Land button.
  3. Set the price. It is safest to set the price to L$0 or L$1. Setting it to L$0 will require you to specify a buyer, ensuring you don't accidentally sell it to the wrong person.
  4. Under "Sell the land to," choose "Specific person" from the drop-down menu and click Select.
  5. Search for and select your own avatar name in the "CHOOSE RESIDENT" window.
  6. Ensure the "Sell the objects with the land?" option is set to "No, keep ownership of objects.". This is another critical step to prevent items on the land from being returned.
  7. Click the Set Land For Sale button.
  8. You must now purchase the land from the group. Right-click the land again and select Buy Land.
  9. A confirmation window will appear. Click Purchase to complete the transaction.

What happens after you undeed the land?

  • You are the owner again: Once the purchase is complete, you are the new owner. Your land usage will reflect this change, and you will be responsible for the land tier based on your personal account.
  • Object ownership: All objects previously deeded to the group on that parcel are now owned by the group and will have a (Group) tag in your inventory. You can take them back into your personal inventory to regain full control, or a group officer can return them to you.
  • Group tier balance: The group will now have a land allowance surplus (since it no longer owns the parcel). If you are an administrator, you can either use this allowance for other group purposes or have members decrease their contributions.

Important considerations

  • Permissions: You must have the appropriate group role with the ability to set group-owned land for sale. If you do not have these permissions, you will need to ask a group owner or administrator to perform the transaction for you.
  • Estate land: The process is slightly different for land on a private estate, as tier rules are handled differently. If you are undeeing estate land, you may want to coordinate with the estate owner or manager.
  • Object transfer: Remember that transferring ownership back to yourself does not automatically transfer ownership of all the objects. You must explicitly set them as owned by you or take them into your inventory again.
