You can refund DLC on Steam if the request is made within 14 days of purchase and you have played the underlying base game for less than two hours since buying the DLC.

The DLC must not have been consumed, modified, or transferred.

Eligibility requirements for a DLC refund

A DLC purchase is eligible for a refund if it meets the following criteria:

  • Time since purchase: The DLC was purchased less than 14 days ago.
  • Playtime after purchase: Since buying the DLC, you have played the base game for less than two hours.
  • Status of the DLC: The DLC or its included items have not been "consumed, modified or transferred". This means items like single-use boosters or consumables may be non-refundable.

Step-by-step guide to refunding DLC

  1. Log in to Steam Support: Go to the official Steam Support website at help.steampowered.com and log in to your account.
  2. View your purchases: Click on Purchases to see a list of your recent transactions.
  3. Select the DLC: Find the DLC you want to refund from the list of your purchases and click on it.
  4. Initiate a refund request: Click on the option that says I would like a refund.
  5. Confirm the request: Click I'd like to request a refund on the next page.
  6. Provide a reason: Fill out the refund request form, including the reason for the refund. If you don't like the content, you can state that.
  7. Choose your refund method: Select whether you want the funds returned to your Steam Wallet or to the original payment method.
  8. Submit the request: Click Submit request.

Analysis of the refund process

When a refund request may be denied

  • Abusing the system: Steam's refund policy aims to reduce the risk of buying an unsatisfactory product, not as a means to obtain free items. If Steam detects abuse of the refund system, they may revoke the option.
  • Non-refundable DLC: Some third-party DLCs are non-refundable, especially those that irreversibly change a game character or provide single-use items. These are marked as non-refundable on the product's store page.
  • DLC bundled with non-refundable content: If a DLC is part of a bundle that includes non-refundable items, the entire bundle may not be eligible for a refund. Steam will inform you if this is the case at checkout.
  • Playtime exceeds limit: If playtime in the base game after purchasing the DLC exceeds two hours, the refund will likely be denied.
  • DLC was "used" or "consumed": If the DLC included consumables, in-game currency, or other items that were used, the refund may be denied.

What happens if your refund request is denied

If a refund is initially declined but you believe it was a mistake or your situation has special circumstances, submit another request with a detailed explanation. Steam staff review all requests, so a convincing argument may lead to an exception.

What to expect after approval

  • Refund time: Approved refunds can take up to seven days to appear in your account. Refunds to the Steam Wallet typically process within 24–48 hours.
  • Playtime retention: Refunding a game or DLC does not remove playtime or achievements from your Steam profile.
  • Repurchasing during a sale: Refunding a recent purchase and immediately buying it again at a sale price is acceptable. Steam does not consider this to be abusing the refund system.
