Installing ActivDriver is a straightforward process, but requires careful attention to your specific operating system and Promethean hardware to ensure a successful setup.
The ActivDriver is the software that enables a computer to communicate with Promethean interactive whiteboards and panels.
Important Update: ActivDriver is generally no longer required for modern Promethean ActivPanels (Elements series, ActivPanel 9, and ActivPanel LX) unless you are using ActivInspire version 2.x or earlier. Most newer devices function as "plug and play" on modern operating systems. If you have a legacy ActivBoard or an older interactive panel, or if you need to use ActivInspire, you will still need to install the ActivDriver.
Before you begin
- Check compatibility: Visit the Promethean support website to confirm if your specific ActivPanel or ActivBoard model requires the ActivDriver.
- Disconnect hardware: Before beginning the installation, ensure that your Promethean hardware is not connected to your computer.
- Check operating system: Know your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux) and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit to download the correct driver.
- Admin rights: Make sure you have administrator privileges on your computer to install new software.
Step-by-step installation guides
For Windows
- Download the driver: Navigate to the ActivDriver support page on the Promethean website. Download the correct driver for your Windows version (32-bit or 64-bit).
- Run the installer: Locate the downloaded file (it will have a
.exeextension) and double-click it to start the installation. - Follow the wizard: The setup wizard will guide you through the process.
- Accept the license agreement and choose your installation type. A "Full Install" is typically recommended.
- Choose the destination for the software and core resources.
- Click "Install" to begin the process. The installation may take several minutes.
- Complete installation: Click "Finish" to close the wizard when the installation is complete.
- Connect and confirm: Connect your Promethean hardware to your computer using the USB cable. A small ActivManager icon (a white or green icon with a Promethean 'P') should appear in your system tray. If it doesn't appear, try restarting your computer.
For macOS
- Download the driver: Go to the ActivDriver support page and download the
.pkgfile for your version of macOS. For newer operating systems, the ActivDriver may be bundled with the ActivSuite or ActivInspire installer. - Open the installer: Locate and double-click the downloaded
.pkgfile. - Follow the wizard: The installer will open.
- Click "Continue" at the introduction screen.
- Read and agree to the license terms.
- Click "Install" and enter your password when prompted.
- Allow system extensions: During or after the installation, you may need to grant permissions for the driver.
- Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- In the sidebar, click Accessibility.
- Check the boxes for "updd" and "UPDD Commander" to ensure they can control your computer.
- Connect and confirm: Connect your Promethean hardware. The ActivManager icon will appear in the menu bar at the top of your screen.
For Linux (Ubuntu)
- Open the terminal: Use the keyboard shortcut
Ctrl+Alt+T. - Add the repository key: Add the Promethean authentication key by saving the file from the Promethean support page and running the command:
sudo apt-key add PrometheanLtd.asc. - Edit the sources list: Edit the sources file to include the Promethean repository:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list. - Update the cache: Update your system's package cache with the command:
sudo apt update. - Install the packages: Install ActivDriver and ActivTools with the command:
sudo apt install activdriver activtools. - Restart and confirm: Restart your computer to complete the installation. Check for the ActivManager icon in your system tray or toolbar to confirm the installation.
Troubleshooting common issues
- Installation errors: If the installation fails on Windows, cancel it and ensure all outstanding Windows updates are installed. You may also need to manually download and install the
vc_redist.x86.exefile, even on a 64-bit system. - Driver not recognized: If your device isn't being recognized, ensure you are using a direct USB connection, bypassing any wall boxes or extension plates.
- Permissions on macOS: If touch or gestures are not working on a Mac, double-check that you have enabled permissions for "updd" and "UPDD Commander" in your Privacy & Security settings.
- Icon not appearing: If the ActivManager icon does not appear after installation, try restarting your computer and ensure your Promethean hardware is connected.
- Firmware updates: For legacy hardware, you may need to update the firmware in addition to the driver. This can be done through the ActivManager Control Panel once the driver is installed.
