Changing the difficulty in Minecraft PE (Bedrock Edition) can be done in two ways: through the world settings menu or by using a chat command. Both methods offer a choice between four core difficulty levels: Peaceful, Easy, Normal, and Hard.

Method 1: Change difficulty in the world settings menu

This is the most common and accessible method for single-player worlds.

  1. Pause the game: While playing your world, press the pause button. On the Pocket Edition, this is the Pause icon at the top of the screen.
  2. Access Settings: From the pause menu, select Settings.
  3. Navigate to Game options: In the settings menu, ensure you are on the Game tab. This is typically the first tab and will show all the basic world settings.
  4. Find the Difficulty option: Scroll down until you find the Difficulty option. It is a button that you can tap to cycle through the different difficulty levels.
  5. Select your desired difficulty: Tap the button until it displays the level you want to play.
    • Peaceful: No hostile mobs will spawn naturally, and your health and hunger will regenerate automatically.
    • Easy: Hostile mobs spawn, but they deal less damage. The hunger bar will drain, but you will not die from starvation.
    • Normal: This is the standard Minecraft experience. Mobs deal regular damage, and you can starve to death if your hunger bar is empty.
    • Hard: Mobs deal more damage, and special mob abilities are enhanced. For example, zombies can break down wooden doors, and starvation will drain your health completely.
  6. Resume the game: Exit the settings menu to apply the change. If you switched to Peaceful mode, any hostile mobs in your immediate vicinity will disappear.

Method 2: Change difficulty using a chat command

For players who prefer using commands or are on a multiplayer server with operator privileges, the /difficulty command is a fast and efficient way to switch the difficulty.

  1. Open the chat window: Tap the chat icon at the top of the screen.
  2. Ensure cheats are enabled: For single-player worlds, you must have the Activate Cheats setting turned on in your world options. If it is off, the command will not work.
  3. Type the command: Type /difficulty followed by the desired difficulty level. The command structure is: /difficulty [level].
    • For Peaceful: /difficulty peaceful or /difficulty p
    • For Easy: /difficulty easy or /difficulty e
    • For Normal: /difficulty normal or /difficulty n
    • For Hard: /difficulty hard or /difficulty h
  4. Execute the command: Press the Enter key or the arrow button to send the command. A message in the chat will confirm that the difficulty has been set.

Understanding the difficulty levels

Choosing the right difficulty can drastically change your gameplay experience. Here is a breakdown of what each setting controls:

Feature Peaceful Easy Normal Hard
Hostile Mobs Do not spawn naturally. Mobs already in the world despawn instantly. Spawn, but deal less damage to the player. Spawn and deal standard damage to the player. Spawn more frequently, deal more damage, and have special abilities.
Health Regeneration Automatically and quickly regenerates, even with a full hunger bar. Does not regenerate automatically. Requires a full hunger bar. Same as Easy. Same as Easy.
Hunger Bar Never depletes. The player will not get hungry. Depletes at a standard rate. Low hunger can reduce health to 5 hearts. Depletes at a standard rate. Low hunger can reduce health to 0.5 hearts. Depletes fastest. Low hunger will kill the player.
Special Mob Abilities None. Zombies cannot break down wooden doors. Some mobs have special abilities (e.g., zombies can damage wooden doors). Mob abilities are enhanced. For example, zombies can break down wooden doors completely.
Villager-Zombie Conversion Not applicable. 0% chance for a villager killed by a zombie to turn into a zombie villager. 50% chance for a villager killed by a zombie to convert. 100% chance for a villager killed by a zombie to convert.

Important considerations

  • Multiplayer Realms and Servers: The difficulty of a multiplayer world is controlled by the server owner or administrator. You will not be able to change the difficulty using the settings menu unless you are the host. If you have operator status, you can use the /difficulty command.
  • Locked Difficulty: The difficulty setting cannot be changed in a world if the Lock Difficulty option was selected during world creation. This is common for worlds with specific challenges or for custom maps.
  • Gameplay Impact: Changing the difficulty on the fly affects the game immediately. Swapping from Hard to Peaceful is a useful strategy if you are in a tight spot, as all hostile mobs will disappear. Likewise, switching from Peaceful to a higher difficulty will allow hostile mobs to begin spawning again.
