To change the color of links in LibreOffice Writer, you must modify the built-in Character Styles called "Internet Link" and "Visited Internet Link". Unlike direct formatting, modifying these styles ensures that all hyperlinks in your document, and all future documents based on the same template, will be consistently updated.

Method 1: Modify character styles for the current and future documents

This is the recommended method for making consistent changes to hyperlinks, as it leverages LibreOffice's styling system.

  1. Open the Styles menu:
    • Click on Styles in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
    • Select Manage Styles (or press the F11 key) to open the Styles sidebar on the right side of the window.
  2. Access Character Styles:
    • In the Styles sidebar, click the second icon from the left at the top. This icon looks like a large "A" and represents Character Styles.
  3. Modify the unvisited link color:
    • Scroll down the list of styles until you find Internet Link.
    • Right-click on Internet Link and select Modify from the context menu.
    • In the "Character Style" dialog box, go to the Font Effects tab.
    • Under the "Font color" dropdown, choose the color you want for your unvisited links.
    • Click Apply to see the changes in your document, and then click OK to close the dialog.
  4. Modify the visited link color:
    • Find the Visited Internet Link style in the same list.
    • Right-click on it and choose Modify.
    • In the "Character Style" dialog, go to the Font Effects tab and change the font color to your desired color for links that have already been clicked.
    • Click OK.
  5. Save as a default template (optional):
    • If you want these hyperlink colors to be the default for all new documents, you must save your changes to the default template.
    • With your changes applied, go to File > Templates > Save as Template.
    • In the dialog box, give the template a descriptive name (e.g., "My Default Document").
    • Crucially, check the box that says Set as Default Template.
    • Click Save.

Method 2: Change application-wide hyperlink colors

This method changes the default colors for all hyperlinks across every LibreOffice application (Writer, Calc, Impress) and affects your entire LibreOffice installation, not just the current document.

  1. Open LibreOffice Options:
    • Go to Tools > Options.
  2. Navigate to Appearance settings:
    • In the tree on the left, expand the LibreOffice category.
    • Select Application Colors.
  3. Adjust the link colors:
    • In the "Application Colors" section, find Visited Links and Unvisited Links.
    • Click the color box next to each to select a new color.
  4. Apply and save:
    • Click Apply, then OK. The changes will take effect immediately and apply to all LibreOffice documents you open.

Method 3: Manually format individual links

This is the least recommended method because it applies "direct formatting" that can be difficult to manage and override, especially in long documents. It is best for making a single, one-off change.

  1. Select the link:
    • Highlight the hyperlink text you want to change.
  2. Change the font color:
    • Find the Font Color icon in the top toolbar. It looks like a capital "A" with a colored line underneath it.
    • Click the dropdown arrow next to the icon and select your desired color.
  3. Remove manual formatting:
    • To revert to the style-based formatting, select the text again and go to Format > Clear Direct Formatting or press Ctrl + M.

Understanding the difference: Styles vs. Options vs. Direct Formatting

  • Character Styles (Method 1): This is the most robust and professional way to manage hyperlink appearance. Changes made to the "Internet Link" character style are applied consistently throughout the document. If you have different documents or wish to share styles, you can easily do so via templates. This allows for complex, consistent styling (e.g., italics, bold, no underline).
  • Application Options (Method 2): This is a system-wide setting. The colors you choose here will be the default for all new hyperlinks you create in any LibreOffice module, regardless of the document's template. However, this method only controls the color and can be overridden by character styles or direct formatting.
  • Direct Formatting (Method 3): This is a manual override for a specific piece of text. It is simple for a quick change but is not scalable. If you later change the document's styles, the manually formatted links will not be updated. This can lead to formatting inconsistencies and is difficult to maintain in large documents.
