To upgrade Cricut Design Space on your desktop, launch the application, click the bell icon in the top-right corner, and select Install Now when the update notification appears. On a mobile device, open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android), search for "Cricut Design Space," and tap the Update button if available. Updates often happen automatically when you open the app while connected to the internet.
Desktop update process (Windows and Mac)
For the most stable and reliable version of Design Space, follow these steps to install the "Live" update:
- Launch Design Space: Open the application on your computer. If you have any ongoing projects, save them before proceeding with the update.
- Look for the update notification: Check the bell icon next to your profile picture in the top-right corner of the app. If an update is available, a notification will appear.
- Choose to install: Click the notification. A pop-up window will give you the option to either "Install Now" or "Install on Next Launch." For immediate access to new features and bug fixes, choose Install Now.
- Wait for installation: The application will close, and an installer will run. Do not interrupt the process. The new version will launch automatically once the installation is complete.
Mobile update process (iOS and Android)
Unlike the desktop app, Design Space on mobile devices is updated like any other app on your phone or tablet:
- Open your app store:
- On an iPhone or iPad: Tap the App Store icon on your home screen.
- On an Android device: Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Design Space: Use the search function to find the "Cricut Design Space" app.
- Check for an update:
- If an update is available, you will see an Update button next to the app name. Tap it to start the download.
- If the app is already up to date, the button will say "Open" instead.
- Open the app: After the update finishes, you can open the app and access any new features.
Advanced: How to switch to the Beta version
For users who want to test new features and improvements before the public release, you can switch to the Beta version of Design Space. Keep in mind that Beta versions may be less stable.
On the desktop app:
- Open Settings: Click the menu in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Change "Application Experience": In the settings menu, find the Application Experience option and change it from "Live" to "Beta".
- Click "Done": The app will restart and install the latest Beta version automatically.
Note on switching back: You can return to the stable "Live" version at any time by following the same steps and selecting "Live" instead of "Beta".
What is the difference between firmware and software updates?
It is important to distinguish between updating the Design Space software and your machine's firmware.
- Software (Design Space): This is the application you use to create projects. Updates add new design features, fix bugs, and improve performance. These updates happen automatically when you open the app on a desktop, but may need to be manually initiated on mobile.
- Firmware (Your Cricut Machine): This is the internal software that controls the basic functions of your Cricut cutting machine. Firmware updates are necessary to ensure your machine works correctly with the latest Design Space features.
How to update your machine's firmware
- Connect your Cricut machine to your computer or mobile device via USB or Bluetooth.
- Open Design Space and navigate to the Settings menu.
- Go to Machines > Update Firmware to check for any updates. If an update is available, follow the on-screen prompts.
Troubleshooting an update
If you encounter problems during the update process, try the following steps:
- Restart the app: Close and reopen Design Space. For desktop, you can also restart your entire computer.
- Check system requirements: Ensure your computer or mobile device meets the minimum requirements for the latest Design Space version.
- Reinstall the app: If the issue persists, consider uninstalling Design Space, restarting your device, and then reinstalling the app. Remember to save any projects to the cloud before doing this, as local project files may be lost.
- Contact Cricut support: If you are still having trouble, contact Cricut Member Care for further assistance.
