Restore the default "Compact" view
If your layout suddenly changed, the easiest and most effective fix is to reset the current view for that folder. This is the most common solution for many unexpected layout changes.
- Open the Outlook desktop application.
- Click the View tab at the top of the window.
- In the ribbon, click Reset View.
- If the Reset View option is unavailable, click Change View and then select Compact.
Switch back to classic (legacy) Outlook
If your layout changed dramatically and you see a new, more simplified interface, you've likely been switched to the "New Outlook" experience. You can revert to the classic version by turning off the New Outlook toggle.
- Open the "New Outlook" application.
- In the top-right corner, find and click the New Outlook toggle to turn it off.
- You may be asked to provide feedback; you can fill it out or skip this step.
- Outlook will close and reopen in the classic layout.
Control the Reading Pane
For users who prefer to view their emails in a separate window, adjusting the Reading Pane is key.
- Navigate to the View tab.
- In the Layout section, click Reading Pane.
- Select one of the following options:
- Off: Hides the Reading Pane. Double-clicking an email will open it in a new window.
- Right: Positions the Reading Pane to the right of your message list.
- Bottom: Places the Reading Pane below the list of emails.
Expand the collapsed Ribbon
If the ribbon at the top of Outlook is missing or only showing tabs, it has been minimized.
- To expand the ribbon: Double-click any of the tabs (e.g., Home or View).
- To keep the ribbon permanently visible: Click the Ribbon Display Options button in the lower-right corner of the ribbon and select Always show Ribbon.
Use the Command-Line Reset
For persistent display issues, a command-line switch can forcefully reset all Outlook view settings.
- Close Outlook completely.
- Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type the following command and press Enter:
outlook.exe /cleanviews. - Outlook will restart with all view settings restored to their factory defaults.
Reset layout settings for the web version
If you use the browser-based Outlook, the layout settings can be adjusted through the Settings menu.
- Click the Settings gear icon in the top-right corner.
- Click Mail, and then select Layout.
- From here, you can manage options like Focused Inbox, Message organization, and Reading pane.
How to approach troubleshooting
Before attempting more complex fixes, identify the type of layout problem you are experiencing.
- For sudden view changes within the classic desktop app: Use the Reset View option on the View tab. This is the most direct fix for a corrupted view setting.
- If you are in the "New Outlook" and want the old interface: Use the New Outlook toggle to switch back to the classic version.
- For missing or collapsed menus and windows: Adjust the Reading Pane (View > Reading Pane) and check the Ribbon Display Options (bottom-right of the ribbon).
- If all else fails for the desktop app: Use the
outlook.exe /cleanviewscommand-line switch. This is a more powerful reset that affects all folder views.
