How Do I Get Normal Outlook Layout?

Restore the default "Compact" view

If your layout suddenly changed, the easiest and most effective fix is to reset the current view for that folder. This is the most common solution for many unexpected layout changes.

1. Open the Outlook desktop application.
2. Click the View tab at the top of the window.
3. In the ribbon, click Reset View.
4. If the Reset View option is unavailable, click Change View and then select Compact.

Switch back to classic (legacy) Outlook

If your layout changed dramatically and you see a new, more simplified interface, you've likely been switched to the "New Outlook" experience. You can revert to the classic version by turning off the New Outlook toggle.

1. Open the "New Outlook" application.
2. In the top-right corner, find and click the New Outlook toggle to turn it off.
3. You may be asked to provide feedback; you can fill it out or skip this step.
4. Outlook will close and reopen in the classic layout.

Control the Reading Pane
