Understanding the security of your trade link
Your Steam trade link is designed to be secure and convenient. It is important to understand how it works and how to protect yourself.
- What is the "encryption"? The "encryption" is the unique, private token attached to the end of your trade URL. The token is a long string of numbers and letters. It is not guessable and identifies you as the recipient of a trade offer. This token is not public on your profile. Sharing it allows trades while keeping your account secure.
- How to stay safe: While the link is safe to share, it's a good practice to regenerate it periodically. If you post your trade URL in a public forum and start receiving unwanted offers, simply create a new URL.
How to reset or generate a new trade link
If you believe your trade URL has been compromised, or you want to refresh it for security reasons, Steam provides a one-click option to generate a new one.
- Access your trade settings: Follow the steps above to get to the
Who can send me Trade Offers?page. - Click Create New URL: Scroll down to the
Third-Party Sitessection and click theCreate New URLbutton. - Confirm: A new, unique, and encrypted token will be generated, making all previous trade links invalid.
Common issues and troubleshooting
- "Why can't I find my trade URL?"
- You need to have Steam Guard enabled on your account for at least 15 days before you can access trade features. If you've recently enabled it, you may have to wait.
- Ensure your inventory privacy is set to
Public. You can check this by going toEdit Profile > My Privacy Settings.
- "My old link stopped working."
- This is intentional. When you generate a new trade URL, the old one is permanently invalidated to protect your account. You will need to share the new one with anyone you wish to trade with.
- "Is it safe to share on third-party sites?"
- Yes, it's generally safe to share your trade link on reputable sites like trading marketplaces or Discord servers. However, always be vigilant for phishing attempts or impersonators. Never log in through a link someone sends you, and always double-check the trade offer details before confirming.
