To forget a saved Wi-Fi network on Windows XP, you must delete its network profile from the "Preferred networks" list.
The process is handled through the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration service, which manages your wireless connections.
Step-by-step guide
- Click the Start button in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
- Select Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel, locate and double-click Network Connections.
- Note: If you are in "Category View," click "Network and Internet Connections" first, and then "Network Connections".
- In the Network Connections window, right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties from the context menu.
- In the new dialog box, click on the Wireless Networks tab.
- The "Wireless Networks" tab shows a list of saved Wi-Fi networks under the "Preferred networks" section.
- Select the Wi-Fi network you want to forget by clicking on its name.
- Click the Remove button.
- Click OK to save your changes and close the Properties window.
Understanding the process
Deleting a network profile removes the saved connection settings, including the password (WPA/WEP key), so your computer will no longer connect to it automatically. This is useful for several reasons:
- Troubleshooting connection issues: If you are having trouble connecting to a network after the password has changed, deleting and re-adding the profile is a common fix.
- Forgetting a public network: Removing networks you no longer use, such as those from a coffee shop or airport, helps keep your preferred networks list clean and protects your security.
- Security: If a network's password has been compromised or you are finished using a public network, removing its profile ensures your computer won't automatically connect to it in the future.
What to do after forgetting the network
After removing the network, your computer will no longer have the connection details saved. To connect to that Wi-Fi network again, you will need to re-enter the password, effectively creating a new network profile.
To reconnect:
- Navigate back to the Wireless Network Connection Properties window as described in the steps above.
- Click the View Wireless Networks button at the bottom of the "Wireless Networks" tab.
- From the list of available networks, select the one you just forgot and click Connect.
- You will be prompted to enter the network key (password) to complete the connection.
