To delete a video from Canvas Studio, you must go to your Canvas Studio library, find the video you want to remove, and use the "Delete" option from the video's menu.
This process permanently removes the video from your personal Studio library.
Step-by-step guide to deleting a Studio video
- Navigate to Canvas Studio:
- In the global navigation menu on the left side of any Canvas page, click on "Studio". This will open your Canvas Studio media library.
- Alternatively, you can access Studio through your Account icon in the global navigation menu and then select "Studio" from the drop-down list.
- Locate the video:
- Once you are in your Studio library, you will see a collection of all the videos and media files you have uploaded or created.
- You can use the search bar or filters to quickly find the specific video you need to delete.
- Open the video's options menu:
- Hover your mouse over the video thumbnail or the video's details.
- A menu will appear, typically represented by three vertical dots (⋮) or an options icon. Click on this icon.
- Select "Delete Media":
- From the drop-down menu that appears, click the "Delete" or "Delete Media" link.
- Confirm the deletion:
- A confirmation window will pop up asking if you are sure you want to delete the media.
- Click "Delete" or "Confirm" one last time to permanently remove the video from your library.
Important considerations before deleting
- Deletion is permanent: Once you delete a video from your Canvas Studio library, it is permanently removed and cannot be recovered. If you might need the video again in the future, it is best to download a copy before deleting it.
- Embedded videos: Deleting a video from your Studio library will also remove it from any Canvas courses where it has been embedded, leaving a broken link or an error message.
- Media Gallery vs. Studio Library:
- Removing from a Media Gallery: If you are an instructor and have published a video to a course's Media Gallery, you can remove it from that gallery without deleting it from your personal Studio library. This is useful for removing a video from public viewing while keeping it in your own collection.
- Deleting from the Studio Library: If you delete the video from your personal Studio library, it will be gone entirely, including from any Media Galleries or embeds.
- Archiving media: Some institutions may offer a different option to "archive" media rather than permanently delete it. Archiving moves the content to an "Archive" collection, where it can later be restored or permanently deleted by an admin.
- Bulk deletion: If you have multiple videos to delete, you can use the multi-select options in your Studio library to delete them all at once. This is especially useful for quickly clearing out old or unneeded content.
