You can check which Google account is your primary one by examining the order of your signed-in accounts or by checking the URL in your browser. There is no official "primary" designation within Google's account system, as the primary account is simply the one you signed into first on a specific device or browser session. This is also known as your "default" Google account.
How to check your default Google account
On a desktop web browser
- Open any Google service, such as Gmail, Drive, or Google Search.
- Click on your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner of the page.
- The account that is listed at the top of the menu is your current default or primary account for that browser session.
Using the Gmail URL method
- Open Gmail in your web browser.
- Look at the URL in the address bar.
- If the URL ends with
/u/0, you are currently using your default account. If it ends with/u/1,/u/2, or another number, you are using a secondary account.
On an Android phone or tablet
- Open your device's Settings app.
- Tap Google.
- At the top, you will see the name and email address of the Google account that is set as the default for your device.
Why checking your primary account is important
Your primary or default Google account determines several key functions on your device and browser, including:
- Which account is automatically used for Google apps and services, such as Drive, Docs, and Calendar.
- The account that new app downloads and in-app purchases are tied to on Android devices.
- The default account for opening shared links to Google documents.
How to change your primary account
If you discover that the wrong account is set as your default, you can change it by following these steps:
On a desktop web browser
- Go to any Google page and click your profile icon in the top-right corner.
- Select Sign out of all accounts.
- Click the Sign in button again.
- Sign in with the Google account you want to set as your new default.
- Once signed in with the new default, you can then sign back into your other accounts.
On an Android device
- Open Settings, then go to Accounts and backup > Manage accounts.
- Tap on the Google account you want to remove and select Remove account.
- Repeat this process for all accounts until only the one you want as the default remains.
- Open any Google app and sign back into your other accounts. The first one you sign into will become the new default.
On an iPhone or iPad
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to Mail > Accounts.
- Select the Google account you want to remove and sign out.
- Go back and sign in again with the email address you want to use as your default.
- You can then sign back into any secondary accounts you use.
