On the Google Chrome web browser, you can change the border color of the new tab page by applying a custom theme.
It's important to understand that you are not changing the border of a "Google search" page itself but rather the color of the browser window that frames all webpages you visit.
How to customize your Google Chrome browser border
Method 1: Using the Customize Chrome menu
The easiest way to change your browser border is through the "Customize Chrome" side panel. This tool allows you to select a color, use a pre-made theme, or upload your own image.
- Open a new tab. In your Google Chrome browser, open a new tab to see the Google search homepage.
- Click the "Customize Chrome" icon. This is a pencil icon located at the bottom right corner of the new tab page.
- Select "Color and theme." A new side panel will appear with customization options. In the "Appearance" section, click the Color and theme tab.
- Choose a new color.
- Pick a pre-selected color: Click on any of the pre-made color palettes to see a live preview of how the browser border and accents will look.
- Select a custom color: Click the color picker icon (the eyedropper) to choose a unique hue from a full spectrum.
- Apply a theme.
- Browse the gallery: In the "Customize Chrome" panel, select Change theme to browse collections of themes created by Google.
- Refresh daily: If you like a theme collection, you can enable the Refresh daily option to have Chrome cycle through different images from that collection.
- Create a theme with AI. In the "Change theme" menu, you can also use generative AI to create a unique theme based on a subject, style, mood, and color of your choice.
Method 2: Resetting your theme or browser border
If you are not happy with your new theme or border color, you can easily revert to the default settings.
- Open the Customize Chrome menu. Click the pencil icon in the bottom right corner of a new tab.
- Click "Reset to default Chrome." At the bottom of the "Color and theme" panel, select this option to return to the standard gray and white color scheme.
Method 3: Removing an old theme
If you previously installed a theme from the Chrome Web Store, you can remove it in your settings.
- Open Chrome Settings. Click the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner of Chrome and select Settings.
- Navigate to "Appearance." In the left-side menu, select Appearance.
- Reset to default. Next to "Theme," click Reset to default to remove the installed theme.
Why the Google search page border cannot be changed
It is important to distinguish between customizing your browser and customizing a specific webpage. The request "How do I change the border on Google?" can refer to either the search engine's homepage or the Chrome browser itself. However, Google does not offer a built-in feature for individual users to change the appearance of the main search page.
- Google's control: Google determines the color and border style of the search page. This is consistent for all users, outside of general theme options. The design is not user-customizable.
- Workarounds for advanced users: Those with technical knowledge may be able to modify website appearances with a custom CSS extension, like "Stylus". This advanced method involves writing custom code to override a webpage's style, but it's not recommended for most users.
Customizing borders within Google apps
While the border of the main Google search page can't be changed, many of its applications, such as Google Docs, allow for custom borders around specific elements.
Add a border to a paragraph in Google Docs
- Select the paragraph. Highlight the text by clicking and dragging your cursor over the paragraph you want to border.
- Open the "Borders and shading" menu.
- Click the Format tab in the top menu.
- Hover over Paragraph styles.
- Click Borders and shading.
- Customize the border. In the pop-up window, you can:
- Select the Position of the border (top, bottom, left, right).
- Adjust the Border width (thickness).
- Choose a Border dash style (solid, dashed, or dotted).
- Change the Border color.
- Adjust Paragraph padding.
- Click "Apply" to add the border to your text.
Add a page border in Google Docs
The Drawing tool can create a border that surrounds an entire page in a Google Doc.
- Click Insert > Drawing > New. This will open a separate "Drawing" window.
- Insert a shape. Click the Shapes icon and choose the Rectangle tool in the drawing window.
- Draw the rectangle. Click and drag to create a large rectangle that will serve as the border.
- Make the fill transparent. Click the Fill color icon (the paint bucket) and select Transparent. This will remove the inner color of the rectangle.
- Customize the border. Use the toolbar to adjust the Border color and Border weight (thickness).
- Click "Save and Close." The drawing will be inserted into your document.
- Adjust the border's position. Select Behind text and Fix position on page after clicking the border to keep it in place as you type.
